Wesley Shaw, Programs Manager, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art at Art Gallery of New South Wales, has matrilineal connections to Dharawal/Yuin and patrilineal connections to Ngarigo country.

Under the guidance and teachings of Yuin Elder Uncle Max Dulumunmun Harrison, he is part of a growing community dedicated to carrying south-eastern lore.

Together, they advocate for environmental sustainability, campaign against the desecration of country, facilitate culturally enriching camps that emphasise self-healing and maintain intergenerational knowledge of cultural practices, ceremony, dance, storytelling, medicine, land care and aquaculture.

Embedded in the lore’s of observation, patience and respect, Wesley’s cultural obligations inform his professional responsibilities as Programs Manager, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art, at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

In this role, he collaborates with curators, artists, educators, public programmers, archivists, communities and numerous external partners to deliver the Art Gallery’s Djamu Youth Justice, Barkandji Canoe Project and Place.
