Emilie Carruthers

Manager - Samsung Digital Discovery Centre
British Museum

At the British Museum Emilie develops and nurtures the Samsung Digital Discovery Centre’s programmes. These include a variety of formats including on site workshops, Virtual Visits and self-led tours for schools, as well as on site and online activities for families. Over the past couple of years Emilie has been an important part of the evolution of the SDDC team into an increasingly dynamic and agile one which has facilitated all kinds of projects. Most recently she has undertaken an expansion of the Virtual Visits programme to meet the increased demand from schools for remote learning experiences since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Emilie has worked in various roles in digital engagement and interpretation in museums in the UK and internationally. Before joining the British Museum, she was a digital curator at Glasgow Museums where she worked on the redevelopment of a digital experience for young people at the Kelvingrove Museum. She has also held positions at the J. Paul Getty Museum, the National Galleries of Scotland and the Quai Branly Museum.

From virtually unknown to virtually everywhere

Live interactive schools workshops rocketed from an often forgotten footnote attracting only a handful of bookings to being the front-and-centre of the British Museum’s learning offer almost overnight. This presentation will explore how that happened and how it has been a catalyst for other digital successes around the organisation. From content to format, from interactivity to safeguarding, from tech skills to presenting personalities, from infrastructure to marketing, the Virtual Visits programme has been a case study on what it is like to scale up a digital project in an organisation.
