Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales encompasses eight sites across Wales: National Museum Cardiff, St Fagans National Museum of History, National Waterfront Museum, Big Pit National Coal Museum, National Slate Museum, National Wool Museum, National Roman Legion Museum, and the National Collections Centre.

This is an exciting time for Amgueddfa Cymru with the development of the Amgueddfa Cymru 2030 Strategy and accompanying new brand. We are looking for a creative and driven 3D Designer to inspire our audiences and support design excellence across the organisation.

The Design Team is made up of 5 members of staff and operates as a studio within the organisation, delivering graphic design for events and communications, exhibition interpretation and 3D exhibition design.

What you’ll do…

  • We are looking for a talented 3D Designer from an exhibition, architecture, or interiors background, to become part of our team.
  • In this role you will lead on the 3D design of major exhibitions, refreshes of our galleries, as well as a range of small displays for the museum.
  • You will develop exhibition designs from concept through to completion, producing sketches, 3D CAD and physical models, visuals, design presentations, drawing package submissions, specifications and schedules.
  • You will be involved in all aspects from concept and presentation, to construction on-siteEnsure design projects are delivered to the highest standards, in line with project timelines and budgets
  • Ensure the seamless integration of 2D graphics/interpretation into exhibition design
  • Together with the Design Manager, ensure the application of the Amgueddfa Cymru brand guidelines
  • Contribute design advice and input to exhibition projects as required
  • Manage and supervise the work of external designers and contractors
  • Manage budgets as allocated, including the management of purchase and procurement processes
  • Produce 3D build tender documents, working with the support of the Procurement team
  • Keep abreast of technical and creative developments in museum design

How you’ll achieve this…

  • Collaboration with a broad range of colleagues and partners to create and deliver exciting concepts and exhibition experiences
  • Working to schedule and budget
  • Effective day-to-day planning and supervision of design projects and associated administrative duties, including budget management and procurement for some project elements.

  • Have exceptional conceptual thinking, curiosity and an abundance of design ideas.
  • Have a demonstrable ability to take design concepts through to excellent final execution, including experience working with client feedback and production practicalities to translate ideas from concept to reality.
  • Have excellent client and communication skills – from presentation and communication to negotiation and influencing skills. The ability to clearly articulate design concepts and strategy both visually and verbally to clients.
  • Put the visitor experience and design excellence at the heart of all their work
  • Can work under their own initiative
  • Share the principles of equality and diversity in relation to Amgueddfa Cymru’s work and the ability to apply these in practice
  • Have an interest in and commitment to the work of Amgueddfa Cymru
  • Have resilience and confidence to succeed under pressure

The knowledge and qualifications you’ll need…

  • A degree or equivalent in a relevant design discipline
  • A good knowledge of the user experience, interpretation, and access
  • A good knowledge of graphic design principles (desirable)

The experience you’ll need…

  • A track record of delivering engaging experiences and imaginative spatial interventions. Experience creating great proposals for projects, including mock-ups, pitch and presentation material.
  • A background in exhibitions, interiors, or architecture, with experience of delivering spatial projects from concept through to construction and completion
  • Experience of managing budgets and/or working to budget and schedule
  • Experience of working in the cultural sector (desirable)

The skills you’ll need…

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with internal and community stakeholders, external designers, contractors, and consultants
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to address and engage a range of users. The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post.
  • Excellent skills with Vectorworks, Sketch-up, V-ray, 3dMax and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Ability to work with a high level of accuracy
  • Strong eye for technical feasibility
  • Ability to research materials and fabrication methods as required
  • Liaise with and build strong relationships with contractors
