Your new organisation
York Museums Trust is an independent charitable organisation created to manage York Art Gallery, York Castle Museum, Yorkshire Museum & Gardens, and York St Mary’s. Our vision is to work together with audiences and communities to inspire, to share and to care for cultural heritage.
Your new role
We are seeking an Associate Collections Curator who will care for and share YMT collections. Working with a team of other Associate Collections Curators, you will help to document and manage YMT’s collections, as well as care for objects on display and in storage. You will work on creating high-quality, audience-focused content for a variety of public engagement formats.
The most significant part of the role will be your work on collections management. You will support the work of the Yorkshire Museum’s team on several major documentation projects relating to archaeological collections. The Yorkshire Museum has recently taken possession of several major archaeological archives and you will be working on the documentation of these. Alongside this you will support YMT’s work with archaeological excavators, helping to administer the system of receiving archives.
What you’ll need to succeed
You’ll have knowledge of good practice for collections care and management, as well as experience of working with collections in a museum setting. This may have been achieved through a formal qualification or equivalent experience. This should include some experience of working with archaeological collections.
Your approach to your work will be accurate and with good attention to detail. You will be someone who enjoys working flexibly and seeks to grow within a role. You will also be an effective communicator who works well with others within a team.
What you’ll get in return
You will have the opportunity to work with collections which are deemed as being nationally significant, with your work contributing to sharing these with York Museums Trust’s audiences. You will work as a part of a supportive team with opportunity to learn from colleagues with a variety of specialisms.
We offer a competitive salary, a defined benefit pension scheme, and a generous leave allowance. Our working hours are flexible with the bandwidth between 7 am and 7 pm, and we offer flexibility to balance time in the office with working from home.
As an organisation York Museums Trust is committed to encouraging and increasing diversity amongst our workforce. We welcome applications from suitably qualified and eligible candidates regardless of sex, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, religion or belief, marital status, or pregnancy and maternity.
