About the role 

This is a rare opportunity to use your digital content skills to help deliver vitally important commercial goals at one of the world’s best loved museums.

The Natural History Museum is seeking an experienced digital content professional to join us at a time of great opportunity. As Digital Content Manager (Commercial), you will lead digital content development across a range of products and services that support the museum’s commercial activities, from individual giving, to membership, to paid-for events. In doing so, you’ll help raise vital funds needed to achieve our mission of creating advocates for the planet.

You’ll also be digital content lead for the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year (WPY) programme, now in its 59th year, helping develop and deliver digital content strategies that drive greater engagement, reach and commercial value from the programme. You’ll be responsible for maintaining content for the WPY website including digital captions, writing features that tell the stories behind the images, and leading and producing social media to highlight the programme across the museum’s main channels.

Guided by best practice, customer data, strategic objectives and user need, you will develop, deliver and iterate digital content, upskills and advise colleagues, and tell jaw-dropping digital stories for the museum’s digital platforms including our websites and social media. This will entail working closely with stakeholders, product team members and end users to plan, source, commission, write, edit and publish content, evaluating its impact and using insights and expertise to optimise content and drive traffic and income.

Day-to-day you’ll be working alongside colleagues from a range of digital disciplines as part of an agile and ambitious product team. You’ll be a member of the museum’s successful Content team in the wider Communications, Digital, Marketing & Publishing Department. Alongside the rest of team, you’ll support with social media moderation and community management as part of a rota.

The role supports the Wildlife Photographer of the Year (WPY) team, the Commercial and Development departments, including Membership, Commercial Events, Publishing, Retail, Licensing, Venure hire, Touring Exhibitions, Consultancy, Donations Cooporate partnerships and Patrons.

About you  

You are a skilled digital content professional with a sophisticated skillset derived from considerable practical experience and training, whether gained through an undergraduate degree, training, or significant relevant experience in journalism, communication, digital media or publishing.

This is an exciting role in which you’ll possess a high degree of autonomy working within an agile product team. We’re looking for someone who is excited by the opportunity to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, alongside highly skilled professionals from different disciplines, collaborating to build, test and iterate digital products that meet user needs and serve our commercial goals. As a result, we’re looking for someone with a pioneering spirit and an innovative, experimental mindset who will be excited to get to grips with this challenge.

You possess:

  • Outstanding writing skills, with the ability to write clear and engaging copy for a given audience, including that based on technical source material
  • Significant experience creating public-facing, fast-turnaround digital content for websites and a range of social media platforms
  • Demonstrable experience of writing and editing substantial editorial pieces, incorporating multimedia and creative storytelling
  • Excellent content planning and project management skills, with experience managing conflicting priorities while ensuring deadlines are met by yourself and others
  • Significant skill as an editor, with the ability to effectively brief and manage writers and other freelancers, providing edits and feedback that lead to high quality results
  • Proficiency at using digital production software including content management systems, project management software and media processing tools such as Adobe Photoshop
  • A strong awareness of digital data and analytics to gauge the success of digital content, including analysing website traffic and other digital engagement metrics
  • The ability to work flexibly, including prioritising workloads on an ad-hoc basis to accommodate urgent tasks
  • A positive attitude and composure under pressure, with a high degree of professional integrity
  • Diplomatic skill, with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively with large teams and stakeholders at all levels
  • A passion for learning about content consumers, their concerns, needs and preferences.
  • Excellent teamworking skill, with the demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues across a range of disciplines
  • Some budget management and administrative experience

Desirable:

  • Experience creating content that helps deliver commercial goals, such as a membership, digital fundraising or other income-generating product
  • Experience working within the cultural heritage, scientific, charity or media sectors
  • Experience of working as part of an agile product team
