The Royal Armouries is the United Kingdom’s national museum of arms and armour, and one of the most important museums of its type in the world.

This post sits within the Interpretation & Digital Engagement team, part of the Public Engagement Department, and will play a key role in supporting the Digital Manager to develop, deliver, and maintain the museum’s digital platforms. The post will be based at the museum’s headquarters in Leeds and have working from home capability.

You will support the Digital Manager in the maintenance, regulation and administration of the museum’s websites, to ensure a safe, compliant and efficient user experience.

To provide support and deputise for the Digital Manager, Collaborate with colleagues in the development of new digital content and online experiences for a range of audiences.

You should have essential experience of managing websites, content management systems, and digital content, experience of accurate data entry and administration and sufficient experienced in the use of Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, Search Console.

This is a full-time, permanent position, working 36 hours per week, 5 days out of 7. The post-holder must be prepared to work on occasion at the weekend, on Bank Holidays and in the evenings.  The role will be hybrid working remotely and onsite, based out of Leeds Royal Armouries site.

Key Tasks

  • You will be responsible for the day-to-day administration of the museum’s digital platforms, including: ensuring published content is accurate and optimised, supporting organisational goals, ensuring legal and organisational standards, particularly those related to accessibility are met
  • To act as deputy to the Digital Manager: You will assist in the development of the Royal Armouries’ website and maximize its impact as the equivalent of the museum’s fourth visitor destination,you will be responsible for monitoring the performance of the digital platforms, troubleshooting problems, and reporting issues, you will provide first line digital platform support to colleagues.
  • Work with colleagues to develop and deliver high-quality digital content

Expertise and experience

  • You will have a broad range of digital skills and experience of managing digital content and web-based content management systems
  • Expertise in the administration of digital content and management systems
  • Experience of contract management and service level agreements
  • Experienced in effective collaborative working and consultation
  • Understand accessibility standards, best practice, and their implementation
  • Understand compliance with statutory obligations and meeting government and National Cyber Security Centre guidelines
  • Experienced in the use of Microsoft Office Suite / Office 365

  • Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams and effective cross-departmental collaboration

The post-holder will be a member of the Interpretation team and will be line-managed by the Digital Manager

Work Experience:

  • Experience of managing websites, content management systems, and digital content
  • Experience of accurate data entry and administration
  • Experienced in the use of Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, Search Console
  • Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams and of effective cross-departmental collaboration
  • Experience of building and/or managing WordPress websites – back and front-end development
  • Experience in developing and maintaining mobile applications
  • Experience of working with marketing teams and understanding marketing objectives
  • Experience managing agencies
  • Experience of user-centred design


  • Strong proof reading and copy-editing skills
  • Computer literate on Microsoft Office Suite / Office 365.
  • Competent user of Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat
  • Proficient in HTML, CSS, Javascript, JQuery, PHP
  • Experience of creating multimedia products including film production, video and audio editing, and graphics


  • Understand web accessibility standards, best practice, and their implementation
  • Knowledge of UX principles and best practices
  • Knowledge of domain name servers and domain name management
  • Knowledge of the Data Protection Act, GDPR and PECR
  • Understanding of WordPress website architecture, servers, and security
  • Knowledge of SEO
