Alek Nelson is the Social Media Associate with Southern Utah Museum of Art (SUMA) in Cedar City, UT, and an MFA candidate in Southern Utah University’s Arts Administration program.
He is from American Fork, UT, and attended Utah State University for his undergrad, majoring in journalism and public relations, with minors in music, computer science, and yoga.
Prior to working at SUMA, he worked as Director of Marketing & Media at the Cache Valley Center for the Arts in Logan, UT. In his free time, he enjoys reading, listening to and making music, and hanging out with his dog, Lady.

The popularity of podcasting has grown significantly over the past 10 years. As reported by the Pew Research Center, 42% of Americans have listened to a podcast in the past month. This platform presents new opportunities for museums to engage and connect with audiences. The Southern Utah Museum of Art has utilized their podcast, ‘Observations and Conversations’, to provide supplemental content to their exhibitions, bring multidisciplinary experts together to discuss art, and showcase staff achievements and projects. This presentation will provide practical tips and tricks for building a podcast from the ground up.
