Fresh ideas from museums around the globe in your inbox each week
Andrew Fox is senior developer on the Web & Digital Team at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco: the de Young and the Legion of Honor museums.
He holds a BA in archaeology from the University of California at Berkeley and an MA in museum studies from San Francisco State University.
Andrew is passionate about open-source technologies and using tools like Minecraft to inspire and empower museum visitors, especially young people.
Minecraft is the best-selling video game of all time, with, as of 2021, over 238 million copies sold and nearly 140 million monthly active users. In this session, we’ll look at early success stories and ambitious projects, such as those from the Tate Modern, the Museum of London, and FAMSF’s Teotihuacan and Legion of Honor Minecraft builds, and examine the challenges and successes of these projects. What does it take to keep these projects alive, relevant, and usable, and how can museums use them to engage visitors, reach a more diverse audience, and nurture virtual communities?
