Director, Hutt City Museums
Courtney Johnston has been director of Hutt City Museums since 2012. In this role she leads The Dowse Art Museum (a contemporary art gallery) and Petone Settlers Museum (a social history museum) as well as being responsible for Community Arts for Hutt City Council.
With a Masters degree in Art History, Courtney’s background spans arts reviewing, communications, publishing, web development, user experience design and Agile project management. She has held roles at City Gallery Wellington and the National Library of New Zealand as well as being general manager of Wellington web and design agency Boost New Media.
Courtney is deputy chair of Museums Aotearoa, New Zealand’s umbrella organisation for museums and galleries, and chair of Arts Wellington, a pan-artform membership group in New Zealand’s capital city. She is a past member of the National Digital Forum board and Creative Commons Aotearoa New Zealand advisory group. For the past six years she has also been a regular arts commentator on New Zealand’s national radio programme, Radio New Zealand.
