Emilija Angelovska is the API Partnerships Lead at the Europeana Foundation, where she works on enabling access to Europe’s digital cultural heritage through APIs.

She supports institutions, developers, and partners in using cultural collections at scale, and helps design services that support meaningful reuse across sectors.This includes analysing usage patterns, supporting external integrations, and helping translate open cultural data into practical use cases.

Her work sits at the intersection of cultural heritage, digital infrastructure, and data-driven services, with a focus on making large-scale collections genuinely usable beyond institutional boundaries.

From Open Access to Real-World Use: What 150M API Calls Reveal About Digital Collections

Open access doesn’t guarantee impact. Drawing on large-scale API usage data from the Europeana Foundation, this session reveals what actually happens when digital collections are made available at scale—and why much of that access fails to translate into meaningful use.

By unpacking real patterns in behaviour, reuse, and drop-off, this talk challenges common assumptions about openness. It then offers a practical framework to help institutions move from simply publishing collections to enabling real engagement, reuse, and value.

Attendees will leave with concrete ways to design, measure, and improve the impact of their own digital collections, even if they do not offer an API service themselves.
