Fresh ideas from museums around the globe in your inbox each week
Janani Subramanian received her doctorate in film and media studies at the University of Southern California and then embarked on a labyrinthine journey through academia and beyond. After teaching at Indiana University Indianapolis for three years, she moved back to Los Angeles to pursue her interests in museum and cultural programming. She worked in the public programs department of the Hammer Museum for six years and then at the SAG AFTRA Foundation for two years designing programs for actors and other media industry professionals. At the Getty Research Institute, Janani supervises the public programming team as they create dynamic, diverse programming that makes the GRI’s magic accessible to a range of audiences. She does her best to squeeze a horror movie into the programming calendar when possible.
Janani Subramanian will be speaking at the Creative Museums Summit 2025 :
The Getty Research Institute is an international center with an extensive library and special collections, and a mission to cultivate and share resources related to the history of art. These are rich resources that are not easily accessible to the general public, and our challenge as programmers is to bring them out of the stacks and storage vaults and into the public eye.
We’ll talk about three creative approaches to turning our resources into engaging content – using outside and inside spaces in unique ways, foregrounding the work of research-based artists and scholars, and screening films that highlight the links between archives and artistic practice.
