Kyra Fastenau

Kyra Fastenau is part of the Public Affairs & Education team at Kazerne Dossin, a Museum, Memorial and Research center on Holocaust and Human Rights in Mechelen, Belgium.

As a project officer, she coordinates the partnerships with the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Flanders, the Belgian Pro League and the Royal Belgian Football Association.

The aim of these partnerships is to offer perpetrators of hate crimes a museum visit as a learning experience, as an alternative to legal prosecution.

Can a museum visit be an alternative to legal prosecution?

Insulting comments on social media, memes inciting hatred. A quarrel between neighbours that gets out of hand or jungle noises in a football stadium. Hate crimes can take various forms. Since 2021, Kazerne Dossin offers the perpetrators in such incidents the opportunity to follow a an individual, tailor-made guided tour in the museum as a learning experience, as an alternative to legal prosecution. What has been the effect so far?
