Mona Jamil

Mona Jamil is a community-oriented coordinator with experience in co-production and co-curation. She has been a part of the Migration Museum since 2016, and manages the museum’s civic engagement initiatives, including community programmes and volunteering and placement schemes. She has previously worked with people seeking sanctuary in a number of capacities, and is a trustee at Refugee Cafe.

As the child of refugees, Mona is passionate about work that uplifts those that have been displaced. Mona studied Anthropology at Goldsmiths, University of London and the University of Amsterdam. She has recently completed an MSc in Human Rights at the London School of Economics.

Beyond Buzzwords – Meaningful co-production practices at the Migration Museum

How do we build a museum that embeds co-production practices beyond one-off events and exhibitions? How can we make sure that the process is mutually beneficial for participants and the museum itself?

These are key questions we’ve been asking ourselves at the Migration Museum over the past few years. We’d like to share the outcomes of our People’s Panel project in 2023 and reflect on the rise of advisory groups/counsels, as well as draw on learnings from our recent Community Curators Programme which successfully pulled together elements of skills building, community legacy and artistic engagement.
