Nellie Seale

Nellie Seale (she/her) is a PhD candidate at the University of Melbourne, researching how museums can use games for community engagement, visitor experience and educational outcomes.

Her academic background is in museum studies and world heritage, with a focus on Indigenous cultural heritage in Victoria. Nellie is also a game designer, and the director and co-founder of Melbourne Megagames where she runs large-scale role-playing events.

She is interested in improving accessibility and diversity in games and understanding how games are being used as education tools.

Welcome to Hell: Finding Hades at the Hellenic Museum

Do you have what it takes to join a secret society and meddle in the affairs of the gods? Come with us to learn about Mysterion: Descent into Hades, a responsive theatre experience by the Hellenic Museum and MedusaRPG. Blending history, mythology, interactive storytelling, and game design, we transformed our museum into the Greek Underworld where players encountered figures from ancient history; embarked on quests; and solved puzzles. We share an example of how a cultural institution can engage new audiences through play… and whether the players managed to reunite Hades and Persephone, trick Hermes, and discover the secret of immortality.
