Nina Earl

Nina Earl is a curator with the Powerhouse Museum and 2023 Churchill Fellow, her practice sits at the intersection of art and science. She is interested in how exhibitions engage communities with the complex issues facing us today. Her portfolio spans themes of contemporary arts, culture, science, and technology and she has worked with local and international artists and researchers.

Curating AI

What defines drawing? Opening a drawing exhibition with a single astronomy teaching slide opposite an AI generated projection might seem an unusual. But this is what happened in ‘A Line, A Web, A World’ at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney. Using the application Stable Diffusion we ‘trained’ the AI on collection and astronomy data to create a digital animation of the hand painted slide. In the process I learnt how to shape the models learning and about the possibilities and limitations of curating AI into an exhibition.
