Shannon Walsh

Shannon Walsh has written and directed six feature documentaries; Adrianne & the Castle (2024), The Gig is Up (2021), Illusions of Control (2019), Jeppe on a Friday (2013), À st-henri, le 26 août (2011), and H2Oil (2009), as well as numerous short films and VR works. Shannon’s films have been broadcast and theatrically released internationally, played in over 100 film festivals globally, and screened in museum spaces, including the Venice Biennale and the Pompidou Centre in Paris. As a scholar she has published in a range of research areas, focused on inequality, social justice, and visual methods. She has published over forty articles and book chapters; two co-edited volumes; and a book on documentary production out in late 2023. Walsh teaches film as an Associate Professor at UBC. She was a 2020 Guggenheim Fellow and was awarded the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2023.

Growing Possibility: Creating opportunity and then letting go

In 2024 Gallery educator Katja Canini, filmmaker Shannon Walsh, and teacher Jennifer Johnston began exploring the possibility of a collaborative film project, in which high school art students would be integrated into the planning, and production cycles.

We will share how we learned to shift from product to process, to step back from control and into connection. Hear from the students, one-year post-project, on what they learned and how participation transformed their understanding of what is possible.
