Thomas Flynn

Thomas Flynn is a UK based digital heritage specialist in 3D digitisation & online publishing and editor of the Spatial Heritage Review newsletter.

Thomas has recently completed the UK Heritage 3D Data at Risk research project in partnership with Wikimedia UK and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

He is a Visiting Fellow to Bournemouth University’s Faculty of Archaeology & Anthropology, a co-chair of the IIIF 3D Community Group, sits on the board of advisors to Rijksmuseum’s 2and3D Photography biennial conference, co-author of glam3d.org, and co-founder of museuminabox.org.

Previously, Thomas was Cultural Heritage Lead at sketchfab.com and launched the British Museum’s first public online collection of 3D scans.

Taking the precarious state of cultural heritage 3D data hosted on commercial platforms as a starting point, the “UK Heritage 3D Data at Risk” project, in partnership with Wikimedia UK and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, explores the issues arising from increased 3D data production outpacing digital infrastructure development and professional best practice—and suggests some ways forward.
