Dorien Theuns

City Programmer and Coordinator
Stedelijk Museum Schiedam

Dorien Theuns works as city programmer and coordinator of the social program line of Stedelijk Museum Schiedam.

The aim of her role is to make the museum a pleasant place for a larger and more diverse group of Schiedam residents and other visitors. She does this – five years now – by working together with the city. Only in this way it becomes clear what needs there are in various communities and how the museum can contribute to them based on its strengths – in this case from art and history. The result of a collaboration can be a small, one-off activity, but also a city-wide programme or an exhibition, such as Out of poverty. Collaborations take place at the initiative of Schiedam residents, the museum or artists.

Dorien Theuns will be speaking at the Museum Social Impact Summit 2024 :

How can an exhibition about poverty make an impact?

What can a museum offer locals who know the daily stress of not being able to make ends meet? Would an exhibition about poverty help them in any way? Stedelijk Museum Schiedam asked itself these questions for years before deciding: the only way to find out is by doing. But they knew they could never do it alone. The exhibition Out of poverty was created together with eleven Schiedam residents who are ‘experience experts’. One review described the exhibition as one that “crawls under your skin”- a call to action to those living in poverty and those who don’t.
