Adrienne Justice

Adrienne Justice (she/her,) is equal parts artist and art educator. She currently works as the Associate Director of Teen Programs at The Philadelphia Museum of Art. Previously she served as the Community Engagement Manager at The Clay Studio of Philadelphia. Adrienne has extensive teaching experience within Philadelphia arts organizations which taught her to consider all students’ abilities, competencies, and personal points of view. She completed her master’s degree in Art Education with an Emphasis on Inclusive Practices from Moore College of Art. Her graduate research focused on how the crisis teaching practices of teaching artists during COVID-19 shaped the methods and approaches of general education as a whole.

As an educator, Adrienne designs curricula with the same thought process she uses to create a body of artwork, making deeply-felt connections that are both conceptual and concrete. Her own art education began in the field of sculpture, with a BFA from Pratt Institute. In her home studio, she explores the comfort and discomfort of domestic spaces through stuffed, stitched, and pierced soft sculpture paired, in installation, with ceramic objects. Her work interrogates the process of aging as it relates to the body and the matriarchal duties of stewardship over domestic objects.

Scaling Engagement: Balancing Deep Curatorial Connection with Wide Community Reach

The Philadelphia Museum of Art’s teen community engagement initiative connected with local teens by distributing 2,000 postcards and collecting over 600 drawings for display. These student submissions were inspired by two instructional videos where local teaching artists led drawing lessons inspired by curatorial themes found within the American art galleries. As museums strive for community relevance, this initiative achieved both deep curatorial engagement and wide community reach. Along with supporting teachers with a classroom activity, displaying student artwork transformed the museum into a community hub, successfully welcoming new families and first-time visitors to celebrate youth perspectives.
