Dr Marco Gilardi

Dr Marco Gilardi is a Lecturer in Games Development at the University of the West of Scotland Creative Computing Technologies Research Group. He is an expert in immersive technologies with particular focus on UX design and implementation of the experience. His research focuses on the application of extended reality (XR) to education and cultural heritage.

No app, no hardware, no limits… WebXR

Expensive, inflexible and requiring custom apps or hardware. This is what we think of when we see glitzy AR projects from major museums. But it doesn’t have to be this way. This presentation will explore the current capabilities of WebXR – exploring the pros and cons of current platforms like Sketchfab and 8th Wall, and introducing Smartify’s newest XR platform for creating low-cost, scalable XR experiences – available on a browser. Smartify has conducted a 2-year long research project with the University of the West of Scotland, culminating in the foundation of an in-house XR team. We will share the outcomes of our research and hint at some of the major web-XR projects you’ll be seeing over the next year or so.
