Emily Casey

As Kids & Families Program Convenor, Emily Casey brings her experience of studio practice and knowledge of audiences to leading participatory learning programs for families at the National Gallery of Australia, Kamberri/Canberra.

Having worked in artist-led organisations and national institutions, including at Mornington Island Art Centre, M16 Artspace, Nottingham Contemporary, Tate Research and the National Portrait Gallery, her work traverses curating, education and research.

Emily has an MA in Art Museum and Gallery Studies from the University of Leicester, and a BA in Visual Arts, and a BA in Asia-Pacific Studies from the Australian National University.

Making artist practices accessible to audiences of different ages and abilities

Using the Creative Conversations series as a case study, staff from the Learning Department at the National Gallery of Australia will share their approach to designing multiple entry points into an artist’s practice for audiences of different ages and abilities.

Structured around an artist talk followed by an artist-led workshop, Creative Conversations is designed to provide audiences the opportunity to experiment with materials as a way of learning about an artist’s practice. Through a process of iteration, Saskia Scott and Emily Casey have refined their approach to centring the needs of families and audiences with lived experience of disability. They will share their key considerations for ensuring that people of different ages and abilities can choose to engage at different levels.
