Emily Simpson is the Content Strategist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, where they help shape digital strategy and storytelling.

They have spent the last twelve years working in science communication and education at non-profits, including past positions as: Senior Content Creator, Social Media Specialist, Public Programs Specialist, Naturalist, and Guest Experience Ambassador at the Monterey Bay Aquarium; and Outreach Specialist at the Arizona Science Center.

Emily holds a bachelor of science in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Arizona. Other titles of theirs include rescue dog parent, baker, and oxford comma enthusiast.

Let’s talk about the internet for a minute. Numerous studies have shown the negative impact social media can have on our mental health—but the internet isn’t going anywhere. So how can museums and cultural institutions help curate digital spaces that don’t just exist but actively prioritise the mental health and well-being of our online communities? This presentation will dive into how Monterey Bay Aquarium pivoted its social media video strategy over the last few years to create content to serve the emotional and mental well-being of their followers while still remaining true to their voice.
