Frits Polman

Frits Polman is the founder and CEO of Guide-ID.

His journey with technology began in 1986 when, at the age of thirteen, he received his first computer. Unlike his friends, who had Commodore 64s, he owned a Sharp MZ-800, for which almost no software existed. This challenge led him to start creating software himself—a moment he describes as discovering the magic of making something from nothing.

This early spark ignited a lifelong passion for technology and inspired him to pursue studies in computer technology and business economics. After graduating, he co-founded a company with a fellow student, which gradually became involved in the museum sector. During a visit with a curator, he was struck by how storytelling could bring paintings and objects to life. He began to wonder why such stories were limited to live experiences.

This question sparked a new adventure: developing hardware and software that could replicate the presence of a curator alongside a visitor. His first version, built for a PDA (a forerunner of the iPhone), evolved into the Podcatcher—the world’s easiest audio guide. Unlike screen-based devices, the Podcatcher allowed people to focus on art without distractions.

Today, Guide-ID is used worldwide, having shared more than 850 million stories. For Frits, the motivation remains clear: to open visitors’ minds and ensure they leave exhibitions feeling truly inspired.
