Jolein van Kregten is Curator of Education at the Van Gogh Museum. For as long as she can remember, she has loved art and sharing that passion with others. With a background in art history, she is always looking for the best way(s) to engage her audience with art – whether through traditional methods or new educational tools such as apps. She is delighted when museum visitors have a personal and meaningful encounter with art and enjoy their museum visit.

Dating a painting: using AI for a personalized and enriching museum visit

What if visitors don’t just stroll through the gallery rooms, but go on a date with a painting? During our pilot, we added an AI feature to our audio tour. After completing a short questionnaire, the visitor was matched with an artwork and received a unique, personalized audio story about the artwork and their own preferences, explaining why this work was a perfect match. We share our lessons learned from concept and development to results and visitor feedback. What worked? What didn’t? How do visitors perceive the use of AI in museums?
