Serah Hoeks comes from the Netherlands, and came to Japan in 2022 to work as a science communicator at Miraikan. She has experience as a safari park tour guide and as an education officer at a nature education center. At Miraikan she is responsible for a wide variety of tasks, ranging from exhibition tours and science related talks to writing blogs and planning events. She is keenly aware of the need for sustainability and a member of Miraikan’s sustainability promotion team.
Serah Hoeks will be speaking at the Green Museums Summit 2026 :
What strategies can help people make environmentally conscious choices when it’s not easy to do so? And how can we get employees outside the sustainability team involved? Based on these thoughts, we did a campaign to promote the use of reusables (think of reusable bottles/cups, chopsticks, cutlery, etc.) that targeted not our visitors, but our employees.
In this presentation, I will introduce how we set up an effective and engaging campaign to promote sustainable behavior by 1) using science-based methods, 2) being realistic and keeping things doable for everyone involved, and, of course, 3) mixing in sufficient fun activities!
