Immersive Soundscapes on the Cutty Sark: Blending Technology and Heritage

Once one of the world’s fastest tea clippers, the Cutty Sark now stands as a cherished historical icon in Greenwich. Hans Biørn-Lian from Royal Museums Greenwich and Thanos Kokkiniotis, CEO of Smartify, recently presented an innovative project that merges heritage with technology: the immersive soundscape of the Cutty Sark. This pioneering initiative explores how sound can enhance visitor engagement while preserving the ship’s historical integrity.

The Inspiration Behind the Soundscape

The Cutty Sark was reimagined through an immersive soundscape designed to bring its maritime heritage to life. The project aimed to replicate the sounds of the ship’s golden age, including weather conditions, the creaking of wooden decks, and the loading of tea chests. Notably, this initiative aimed to complement traditional audio guides and other interpretation tools by offering an accessible and engaging experience that enhances, rather than replaces, existing interpretative methods.

The soundscape is rich in layers, featuring ship sounds, weather effects, and original compositions by Colin Riley and Nick Pendlebury of Sonic Collaborations. These elements offer a sensory journey that reflects life on the Cutty Sark in various conditions, from calm seas to violent gales.

Why Sound?

Sound was chosen for its ability to evoke powerful emotional connections, with early visitors describing feelings of nostalgia, adventure, and even awe as they explored the ship while immersed in its rich auditory environment. While augmented reality and virtual reality were considered, their cost and complexity led to a focus on sound as a simpler, yet equally effective, medium. Early trials demonstrated that sound could engage visitors deeply, offering a high return on investment in terms of both visitor satisfaction and operational practicality.

The soundscape allows visitors to customise their experience through a smartphone app. Users can adjust settings like wind intensity and balance between ambient sounds and music, creating a highly personalised encounter.

Overcoming Challenges

The installation of a location-aware digital experience on a historic ship posed significant challenges, including managing signal interference from the ship’s metal components and finding unobtrusive beacon placement that would not disrupt the vessel’s historical integrity. Bluetooth beacon technology was selected for its unobtrusive design and ability to interact with visitors’ smartphones. The project benefited from a collaborative approach. Royal Museums Greenwich leveraged the expertise of Smartify, whose platform already supported the museum’s digital offerings. This partnership enabled seamless integration and maximised the soundscape’s impact.

Additionally, curatorial staff ensured historical accuracy, while composers Riley and Pendlebury crafted music that enhanced the ship’s narrative. Their work created an atmosphere that feels alive and responsive to the ship’s history.

Early Feedback and Future Directions

Initial feedback has been positive, with visitors appreciating the novelty and depth of the soundscape. One visitor remarked, ‘It felt like stepping back in time—the sounds made the ship’s history come alive in a way I never expected.’ However, the project team acknowledges opportunities for improvement. For instance, some visitors confuse the soundscape with the traditional audio guide, highlighting the need for clearer marketing and differentiation.
